tINI // DESOLAT, GERMANY biography

It took tINI only a few years of playing in clubs to become one of Germany’s most highly acclaimed female artists in techno and house music.

Her involvement with rhythms and beats started at the age of 7, when tINI, who is originally from Munich, began playing drums, while the curiosity and passion for sounds finally led her to first production attempts on her brother’s Atari. While her general interest in music has been aroused by new romantics, wave and grunge, her first dj adventures started with underground hip hop to rap. As her interest, knowledge and skills developed, her DJ style became more electronic when she stumbled upon Moodymann’s “Amerika”.

It was in summer 2003 that tINI started playing frequently in clubs and events in and around Munich. First DJ appearances throughout Europe and her first own nights and residencies followed soon.

In 2008 tINI joined Desolat and the Artist Alife family, after she caught attention of Loco Dice during few performances at the same spots. No doubt this was an initial spark. Becoming a constant part of the worldwide Desolat nights by that time, her profile assumed shape, while more and more clubs became aware of the curly haired talent with that powerful, vivid temper, who intuitionally knows how to enchant her crowd whether during smart-building warm-up or igniting main-time sessions.

“That’s right“, her production debut on the Desolat X Sampler in 2009, became a timeless groove monster with high profile DJs worldwide and a perfect proof that future is looking bright for this grand dame of deep twisted tech funk.

Residencies for Ibiza’s original Ushuaia, London’s in-demand “Fuse” events and Cocorico in Italy plus being the official tour support for Marco Carola on his worldwide album presentation were just a few high- lights of recent months.
The most significant highlight of this unique career has been saved for autumn 2011, when her debut artist album gets released on her label homebase Desolat.

As tINI’s life is ruled by magic moments and deep acquaintanceships, her first longplayer has been named after her best friend “Tessa”, who was the first person to introduce her to the colourful, sometimes dream- like world of Ibiza, where tINI spent the summer of 2010 and produced a majority of her album. It’s a musi- cal documentation of an influencing stage of life, inspired by a chaotic but at the same time peaceful island and special people she met there and who can even be heard in many of the tracks.

A relentless and unstoppable Nick Curly heads into 2012 on the back of yet another excellent year. Nick once again reached the highest echelons of Resident Advisor’s annual DJ poll, released Cocoon’s biggest selling 12” of 2011 and his residency at Space Ibiza’s Kehakuma continued to break new ground. Unquestionably proud of his home-town, this Mannheim native’s talent and determination has long outlasted the hype that broke out in the late 00’s over the house sound which emerged there.

January 1 sees him launch his ‘Between The Lines’ tour at the Cecille showcase at Mexico’s BPM Festival, alongside DJ Sneak. Perhaps it is fitting that his debut tour show brings together Nick, his own label which helped propel him to his current standing and one of his own personal heroes in the form of Sneak.

‘Between The Lines’ refers to the debut artist album from Nick Curly. Recorded in the latter half of 2011, it is scheduled for release in March 2012 on Cecille Records. Given his undoubted success in releasing dance-floor cuts, the somewhat slower feel of the album may come as a surprise to some, although the artist himself has always been ready to show a different face to his musical expression. “My main aim with this project was to capture an emotional feeling” explains Nick. “I brought in live instrumentation to give more sonic depth and I think the vocals of Rebecca Maas, Luca Sportiello and, in particular, Worthy Davis give the tracks exactly what I was looking for – ‘Piano in the Dark’ and ‘Underground’ being the examples I would highlight.”

And what of the album’s title? “Well, of course, I am German, but not 100% German orientated with my work. In fact, there have been many occasions when I am playing at home and people are surprised that I am German when they meet me – I have no idea why that is! I spend much time touring and playing in the UK, the USA and around the world. Sometimes I feel that I don’t really belong in one particular place, the same with my music.”

Lovers of his club music, should not fear. Nick has things on the way to keep you warm. His huge remix of Zoo Brazil’s ‘Slob’ has just been released on Sci+Tec and already climbing charts. ‘Still Not Sorry’ follows shortly afterwards on 8 Bit and the final EP before the album ‘A Certain Someone’ arrives in January.

Demand for Nick’s DJ sets remain as high as ever – with tour dates confirmed in Mexico City, Stockholm, Berlin, Cologne, Bogota, Lima, Hamburg, Beijing, Tokyo, Newcastle, Milan, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Wurzberg, Rome, Lyon, Zurich, Mallorca, New York, Toronto, Geneva and more besides.

Die Rote Liebe findet an Silvester im Kölner Roxy statt. Tobias Becker entdeckte dieses schwer definierbare Kultobjekt bereits vor ein paar Monaten für seine neu ins Leben gerufene Platzhirsch After Hour “Halali”. Den Namen, Roxy, kennt fast jeder in Köln, aber niemand gibt öffentlich zu jemals dort gewesen, bzw. abgestürzt, zu sein. Woher diese Verleumdungen kommen? Das Roxy gibt’s schon lange! Insofern ist das Interieur auch heute noch dasselbe wie schon zur Eröffnung. Bis auf die alte Leuchtschrift, diese findet man ab jetzt im Stadtmuseum Köln. Ein historischer Ort also, der in diversen Artikeln mal als Diskothek, mal als Kneipe beschrieben wird. Wir freuen uns auf eine neue Erfahrung und sind gespannt was uns erwartet.

Art Department Take Over The Universe with the summer release of Art Department’s debut single ‘Without You / Vampire Nightclub’ still tearing up dancefloors around the globe, Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White are gearing up to take over the universe in 2011. Close to finishing their debut album, the pair, are currently working on remixes for Will Saul, No Regular Play and Jamie Jones. The pair’s debut Ibiza experience at DC10 this summer (pictured below) guaranteed Art Department legendary status in the same week that ‘Without You’ hit number one in both the Resident Advisor and Beatport dj charts. Word from Crosstown Rebels HQ is that the forthcoming album is a sensation! Art Department have unveiled details for their debut album, The Drawing Board. Given the soaring popularity of last year’s “Without You,” you’d think Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow had been at it together for years. In fact, though both artists have long been active in Toronto’s club scene, that 12-inch was the first (and is still the only) record in the duo’s catalog. Much like that massive single, their debut album is all about sinister but sexy vocal house, often with Glasgow’s own deep croon. The Drawing Board also features a few guest appearances: Seth Troxler delivers vocals on a new track called “Living the Life” as well as the already released “Vampire Nightclub,” and Osunlade joins Boston duo Soul Clap on “We Call Love.” The album will come out on CD through Crosstown Rebels at the end of April. A month ahead of its release, Art Department will debut their new live act during the Get Lost party at Electric Pickle in Miami.

Since the moment he spun his first record, Damian Lazarus’s mission has been a clear and urgent one: to blow away the mediocre, the over-inflated, the obsolete; to seek out and celebrate the energetic, the important, the new. Always rebelling, always going places.

One of the most in-demand acts right now, Nick Curly can look back on an enthralling two year spell where his package of killer productions, red-hot record labels and captivating DJ sets have combined to make him one of the most talked about artists to arrive on to the underground scene.

This summer, he takes his career to a new level when he launches his DJ residency at Space Ibiza and provides one of the mixes in the latest instalment of the iconic ‘Cocoon Ibiza Summer’ compilation series, alongside Marco Carola.

Producing records since 2005 and, at that time, only a well known name in Germany’s Rhein-Ruhr area, Nick’s early releases on murmur, Supernature, 8 bit and Plastic City laid the groundwork and lit the fuse in the mid 00’s, before subsequent tracks like ‘Pujante’ (Cocoon), and the Cecille releases ‘Stuntman’ and ‘Dubnoise’ saw Nick explode out of the domestic German scene and on to the worldwide stage for the first time. The big names were not slow to identify his talent and hugely well received remixes soon followed on Get Physical, Liebe*Detail, Mobilee and Saved.

As a creator of taste, Nick has taken his Cecille and Cecille Numbers labels into the stratosphere since their inception, delivering one dancefloor smash 12” after another and, in the process, helped launch the careers of acts such as Markus Fix, SIS, Robert Dietz and Alex Celler. More recently, his work together with partner Gorge on his ‘other’ label 8 Bit Records has consistently been hitting the highest heights and Nick now finds himself in the enviable position of having three of the top 20 charted labels on Resident Advisor’s esteemed DJ charts each month.

Ibiza attracts all sorts of wanderers, so it’s only natural that Nicole Moudaber—born in Nigeria, raised there and then in Lebanon, and now a resident of London—would take to the White Isle as her second home.

The DJ that Carl Cox named “Most Underrated DJ of 2009” is surely earning her acclaim this summer. Not only has she held court on a weekly basis at Es Vive’s Church on Sunday; she played a three-hour set with Cox in the main room at Space back in July, and she’s gearing up for two more appearances there on August 31 and September 22. Fans in the UK can catch her at the South West Four open-air festival in London on August 28.

Just this week, Moudaber released her new EP, ‘Cacahuetes’, on Monique Musique, with two original tracks and a Tania Vulcano & Tato remix. Its percussive, almost tribal tech-house feel is even tougher than on her last single, ‘Avocado in My Belly’, nicely expanding on her penchant for diryt, low-slunk.

We asked Moudaber a few questions about where she’s been and where she’s going. Read on for the full interview.

Nicole Moudaber, ‘Cacahuetes’ [Monique Musique]

Can we talk a bit about your background? Your bio says that you grew up in Nigeria and Lebanon.

I was born in Nigeria and lived there for my adolescent years; my family still has businesses there. I then moved to Lebanon for a few years and then onto London for my University studies. Lagos, Nigeria—love it. It’s a jungle out there! Musically it is so rich, and amazing artists have come from there, like Fela Kuti and Sade to name but a few.

When and where did you discover electronic dance music? What was the house/techno scene like when you were living in Lebanon? Were there many clubs?

I discovered it in NYC actually, on the dancefloor at Twilo! But I introduced dance music to the Middle East; it was non-existent at the time. After many years of war, they had a lot of catching up to do—now there isn’t one DJ on the planet that hasn’t played Beirut City!

How did you start DJing and making music? Did you teach yourself, or did you have mentors?

I taught myself really; I love music, I live it and breathe it, it’s my passion in life. I was a promoter before I got into productions; I ran my nights for five years, a monthly club night called Soundworx at Turnmills in London. I have been exposed to great music all my life so it is a natural progression from there really. I always wanted to create music and convey that feeling I had in the clubs.

What is your studio setup like these days? Any preferred pieces of gear/software?

Ableton 8 and Logic 9.

How would you describe the music you make and the sets you play?

Driving, techy and dirty.

What’s your family’s reaction to your career and your music?

They would’ve loved to see me working in the UN or some investment bank! (Laughs). But they’re actually really supportive, they love to see me happy and that’s the most important thing to parents I suppose.

Did you know that Carl Cox was going to name you “Most Underrated DJ of 2009”?

I had no knowledge of it until a friend of mine pointed it out to me three weeks later! But I was really blown away by it when I found out; he pretty much exposed me to the world! Carl has been a great supporter of my work, and it had a major effect on my career.

You’ve got a ton of bookings in Ibiza this summer. How long have you been playing there/ what can you tell us about the Church on Sunday at Es Vive parties? Are you living on the island for the whole season?

Church is a weekly party. DJs come in and jam if they’re free on that night, and it has a great atmosphere in there, very intimate and underground. In terms of living I spend six months of the year in Ibiza, the rest in London.

Your bio says you regularly return to Beirut and Jordan to play. What’s the scene there like these days? What kind of tracks & sounds are people into?

Beirut yes, but not really Jordan, I have only played there twice. But Beirut is a 24-hour party city now; the people there love all kinds of dance music, from prog to techno. And this year it was dubbed as the number one city in Newsweek.

You’ve built your career the old fashioned way, with a lot of gigs and a lot of work. What advice would you give to anyone just starting out now?

My advice is to be consistent and persevere in the path you take. It’s the only way!

Finally… Your last single was called ‘Avocado in My Belly’. Do you have any good avocado recipes for us?

The story behind that title is quite funny actually. I had avocados that weren’t ripe enough, so I put them in the microwave for a couple of days, I put a sticker on to remind myself there’s an avocado in the there, and that’s how the title came about.

Unfortunately I can’t cook so won’t be able to give you any recipes!!I have only just learned how to boil an egg and to make a salad. [Laughs]
